SUMMARY:May is Museum Month
DESCRIPTION:Celebrate all May is Museum Month at TRM! Stay tuned for updated events in May\, including Doors Open Toronto. \nAbout May is Museum Month/Mai\, Mois des Musées\nMay is Museum Month/Mai\, Mois des Musées is an annual program run by the Ontario Museum Association celebrating the contributions of Ontario’s over 700 museums\, 37\,000\nvolunteers and 11\,000 workers. It coincides with International Museum Day\, on May 18th\, organized by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) to showcase the impact that museums have on their communities. With this year’s theme being “museums for education and research”\, we are encouraging individuals across Ontario to consider the vital contributions museums make as spaces of cultural understanding\, learning and innovation. \n\nAbout International Museum Day (May 18)\nEvery year on May 18 since 1977\, ICOM has organized International Museum Day (IMD). On this day\, participating museums plan creative events and activities related to the IMD theme\, engage with their public\, and highlight the importance of the role of museums in their communities. This year’s theme focuses on museums for education and research\, and highlights the impact of museums as “dynamic educational institutions fostering learning\, discovery\, and cultural understanding”.

SUMMARY:Online Lecture: An Evening with Stephen R. Bown
DESCRIPTION:Join us and author Stephen Bown on January 18! \nPlease join us for an evening with award-winning author Stephen R. Bown as he discusses his latest book Dominion: The Railway and the Rise of Canada\, which tells the gripping and eye-opening account of the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway and how it enabled the nation of Canada. \nWith over 3\,000 kilometers of track\, much of it driven through wildly inhospitable terrain\, the CPR would be the longest railway in the world and the most difficult to build. Its construction was the defining event of its era and a catalyst for powerful global forces. \nThe times were marked by greed\, hubris\, blatant empire building\, oppression\, corruption and theft. They were good for some\, hard for most\, disastrous for others. The CPR enabled a new country\, but it came at a terrible price. \nIn recent years Canadian history has been given a rude awakening from the comforts of its myths. In Dominion\, Stephen Bown again widens our view of the past to include the adventures and hardships of explorers and surveyors\, the resistance of Indigenous peoples\, and the terrific and horrific work of many thousands of labourers. His vivid portrayal of the powerful forces that were molding the world in the late 19th century provides a revelatory new picture of modern Canada’s creation as an independent state. \n  \nTICKETS AVAILABLE HERE \n  \nABOUT STEPHEN\nStephen R. Bown is the author of eleven books on the history of exploration\, science and ideas. He has won the BC Book Prize\, the Alberta Book Award and the William Mills Prize for Polar Books. His previous book\, The Company: The Rise and Fall of the Hudson’s Bay Empire\, was a national bestseller and winner of the 2021 National Business Book Award and the J.W. Dafoe Book Prize. Born in Ottawa\, he now lives near Banff in the Canadian Rockies. \n  \nABOUT TRM\nThe Toronto Railway Museum (TRM) brings people together by telling stories of Toronto’s railway heritage. The Museum is located in the heart of downtown Toronto and is typically open year-round. TRM presents exhibits\, tours\, educational programs and publications that broaden the understanding and appreciation of Toronto’s rich railway history. TRM is committed to telling the stories of the railways\, and welcoming conversations of its varied experiences through its lecture series\, exhibits and integrated programming with a mission to learn from the past to make the future better. \n

SUMMARY:Online Lecture: Halifax Explosion and the Role of Railways
DESCRIPTION:Join us for “Halifax Explosion and the Role of Railways\,” an online lecture on December 14! \n  \nOn December 6\, 1917 the SS Mont-Blanc collided with the SS Imo in the harbour of Halifax\, Nova Scotia. What resulted was a devastating explosion that caused many deaths\, many more casualties\, and the destruction of Halifax itself. This explosion is still regarded as one of the largest human-engineered explosions on record and is an unforgettable part of 20th century Canadian history. Responding to the disaster was a collective effort that included the railways in northeastern Canada and the US. Join Roger Sarty and the TRM on December 14th\, 2023 to learn more about the disaster and the railway’s role in the recovery from the explosion. \n  \nGET TICKETS HERE \n  \nABOUT ROGER SARTY \nRoger Sarty\, professor emeritus\, Wilfrid Laurier University\, was previously deputy director of the Canadian War Museum\, and Senior Historian at the Department of National Defence. He is the author\, co-author or editor of more than a dozen books\, including the official history of the Royal Canadian Navy in the Second World War. At the Canadian War Museum he led the team that produced the exhibits for the new building that opened at Vimy Place in Ottawa in 2005. His interest in military history developed during his childhood in Halifax\, not least because of the stories then current among older residents and their children about the great explosion of 1917. He was privileged to edit the manuscript of the noted journalist\, the late Joseph Scanlon\, for publication as Catastrophe: Stories and Lessons from the Halifax Explosion (Wilfrid Laurier University Press\, 2020). \n  \nABOUT THE TORONTO RAILWAY MUSEUM (TRM) \nThe Toronto Railway Museum (TRM) brings people together by telling stories of Toronto’s railway heritage.
