SUMMARY:Online Lecture: Toronto Union Stations
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the final lecture in our 10th anniversary series\, Toronto Union Stations 1927-2020!\n\n\n\n\n\n\nAbout Toronto Union Stations\, 1927-2020\n\n\nAfter almost 25 years of planning and construction\, Toronto’s fourth Union Station opened to great fanfare in August 1927 with a visit by the Prince of Wales\, later King Edward VIII. Over the following decades\, the station would witness the Depression\, World War II\, the railway’s transition from steam to diesel motive power\, the decline of intercity and long-distance passenger trains\, the near demolition of the building in the 1960s\, and the repurposing of the station as commuter hub. After Union Station was acquired by the City of Toronto in the 21st century\, a renovation and restoration process began that would take almost as long as its initial construction a century earlier. An extensive array of photographs\, maps\, diagrams and animations will illustrate the history of this National Historic Site. \nThe lecture will be presented digitally through the WebEx platform in one evening and divided into two sections with a short break in the middle. Please note that lecture capacity is limited due to the hosting platform used. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nTickets for our Online Lecture\, Toronto Union Stations 1927-2020\, now available on Eventbrite. \nABOUT DEREK BOLES:\nDerek Boles is the chief historian of the Toronto Railway Museum and a founding member of the Toronto Railway Historical Association. He wrote several articles and a book on Toronto’s railway history and led many popular railway-themed walks for Heritage Toronto\, where he served as a board member for seven years and consulted and researched several railway historic plaques installed throughout the city\, many of them commemorating the city’s railway history. From 2006 to 2012\, he led monthly tours of Union Station and hosted the annual Doors Open event at that venue.
